General

Villanova and Cabrini have reached a final agreement for Villanova to assume ownership of the Cabrini campus at the conclusion of Cabrini’s final academic year, while maintaining the Cabrini name for the campus, preserving Cabrini’s overarching legacy and mission, as well as a number of its many impactful initiatives. Villanova will take the next year to ascertain the best way to incorporate and utilize the Cabrini Campus for the benefit of students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Since announcing the potential agreement between Villanova University and Cabrini University in June 2023, Villanova and Cabrini’s leadership have been completing the necessary due diligence to reach a final agreement. The boards of trustees of Cabrini and Villanova, along with the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, have now approved the final agreement between the institutions. Closing on the transaction will be contingent on a number of regulatory and other approvals.

Cabrini University has a two-tiered board consisting of the “Members of Cabrini University Corporation”, the Guadalupe Province Provincial Council of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Cabrini Board of Trustees. This particular vote required the approval of both entities. A vote of the Members must occur within 30 days of the vote of the Board of Trustees.

In a shifting and increasingly difficult higher ed landscape; ongoing financial challenges and declining enrollment led us to the difficult decision to close Cabrini University and seek a partner institution to help preserve the school’s legacy and mission and honor the original intention for the Cabrini campus to promote opportunities in Catholic education. Villanova was the best choice to achieve that goal, given the alignment between our institutions’ educational and spiritual missions.
Over the years, Cabrini has made significant efforts to boost enrollment through various strategic initiatives including new programs and partnerships, working to attract international students, and developing online options. We also sought to cut expenses to the degree possible, but ultimately none of those strategies were enough to overcome Cabrini’s long-term structural operating deficit. We explored partnerships with other institutions but ultimately decided that this agreement with Villanova provided the best path to sustaining Cabrini’s mission, history, tradition—and importantly—legacy.

We are not disclosing the specifics of the financial arrangement because, while the agreement has been approved by the boards of trustees of both institutions, completion of the transaction is contingent on a number of regulatory and other approvals, which are expected to be received over the next 12 months.

We are working closely with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and have cooperated fully with their inquiries throughout this process. We expect Cabrini to remain accredited through the completion of this final academic year.

Many of the details are still under consideration, However, Villanova is exploring opportunities and possible options to leverage Cabrini’s strong accredited education programs. Villanova also plans to advance Cabrini’s goal to produce more nurses educated in the Catholic tradition to serve the underserved. As more information becomes available, we will share that here.

Cabrini will continue its operations through the 2023-24 academic year and no definitive plans have been made regarding how the Cabrini campus will be used once Cabrini ceases operations on June 30, 2024. Villanova plans to use this next year to engage its community to ascertain the best way to incorporate and utilize the Cabrini Campus for the benefit of students, faculty, staff and alumni. Additionally, while the agreement has been approved by the boards of trustees of both institutions, completion of the transaction is contingent on a number of regulatory and other approvals, which are expected to be received over the next 12 months.

Cabrini’s 2023/24 academic year will continue as planned. Moving forward, Villanova will be careful and deliberate in its approach, prioritizing its commitment to being a good neighbor and citizen of the local townships in which the Cabrini campus and Villanova’s main campus reside.

Villanova recognizes that, just like its main campus, the Cabrini campus is located within a residential community. The University prioritizes its role as a good neighbor and has dedicated significant resources to both proactive communications with those who live near campus and to quickly addressing concerns that arise.

Villanova will work with local township officials to find an initial opportunity to share information with residents and answer questions. As this process moves forward, they will continue to identify ways to share updates, address concerns and meet with members of the community.
